What is the easiest way to enlarge the primer flash hole on 223 Rem brass?
Picked-up some brass in the range with head-stamp IMG 9-89 (Guatemala Military Industry?) and when I try to trim with Lee trimmer, the tip of the pilot would not go through the flash hole. I then noticed the flash hole on IMG cases are considerably smaller than RP, FC, and AD head-stamped brass cases. IMGs are also longer, 1.768 inches (spec asks for 1.760) hence the trimming. I will be using them in semi-auto rifle and want to keep them as close to SAAMI specs as possible. Thanks.
They are boxer-primed. Drill bit size 1/16 fits perfectly into the single flash hole in the middle of the IMG brass primer pocket. What I found is that 5/64 drill bit size makes a flash hole very close, if not exact, to the ones in the Remington and FC cases.
Sounds like there's a good chance you have some Berdan-primed brass. This is generally not worth the trouble. Look inside to see if there are two flash holes. If so, they will NOT be centered where you'd think the flash hole should be. Berdan cases are best sold to the scrap yard.
If there is a single, centered flash hole, you may just have a military crimped boxer-primed case. The military crimp can be reamed. You can enlarge the flash hole to standard size with a drill.
