Furniture With The Shabby Chic Look

For a piece of furniture to be considered a genuine antique it should be at least a hundred years old.However, many people are keen to create a domestic scene using some of the better known antique styles but not enthusiastic about paying the prices required for the genuine article!Clearly, antiques or modern reproductions of antique furniture will only fit well in period homes.It's here where the rest of the architecture and décor will complement the look owners of Edwardian, Victorian or even older properties want to achieve.

French antique furniture styles remain very popular using oak, walnut and ebony. During the rule of King Louis XIII, French furniture became much more extravagant making extensive use of scrolls and shell carvings as well as expensive upholstery.  Modern reproduction French antique style furniture is inspired by this classic Louis style.  Chateau furniture is a range that encapsulates  this opulence, using hand carved details and an  antique ivory painted finish to deliver what’s been described as a “shabby chic” effect.White painted furniture of any description also achieves that air of slightly ruffled elegance.  Belgravia is a good example of white painted furniture that has that ineffable style but is also good value for money.Even though it’s made from pine and mdf, the lightly distressed effect still creates a sense of decadence on a budget.

Although they may be ornate, these furniture items are still highly functional and with a range of dressers, sideboards and display cabinets they can establish a complete décor appropriate to their surroundings.English antique styles are also commonly copied or reproduced with the Rococo style championed by Thomas Chippendale being among the most popular.However, in the realm of shabby chic, it’s the distressed elegance of the French style that still counts.There's no doubt that although the look works in almost every room in a sympathetic house, the bedroom is where that piece of French countryside charm works best.
