A Brief History & Explanation Of Hammers
Hammers are regarded as the oldest tools used by man, and they were presumably the devices with which other tools were originally manufactured. The oldest hammer we know of was very probably worked with about 2-1/2 million years ago to fashion ancient knives or arrowheads. Fortunately, in modern times we may buy our blades and save the hammers for nails, chisels and occasionally an unfortunate thumb. The three most popular types of hammers are discussed in the following paragraphs, along with descriptions of specific products. Don't forget to look at the Air Wrench.
A claw hammer is intended mainly for hammering nails into other materials. Occasionally, the claw end will be used to remove nails which were incorrectly hammered in by some other guy. The head on a claw hammer is fashioned using somewhat brittle steel, as a result those hammers were never meant for metalwork. However, they hold their own on wood, plaster and the other guy’s thumb. Also, be sure not to miss the Air Grinders.
Stanley has a properly manufactured 16 oz claw hammer with a fiberglass handle which would look good in your tool chest. The bright yellow handle is easy to see in the tool chest, and the handle’s fiberglass material and textured rubber make it easy to grip, while the heat treated head makes it brutal on fasteners.
Ball-peen hammers are very different from claw hammers because these hammers have a spherical strike surface and never have a claw-end. This kind of hammer is useful in metalworking procedures for things like striking punches and chisels with the needed force to carve metal. Occasionally, it can be employed to shape sheet metal if the proper machinery is not around. Thanks to the way these particular hammers are employed, they are not very likely to flatten thumbs, but knuckles occasionally become collateral damage. Klein Tools, Inc. makes a 12.5 inch ball peen hammer that boasts a high-carbon steel head. The super-hard hickory handle offers more heft to the strike and is adequately resilient for years of banging on things.
A sledgehammer is made with a large head, flattened on both sides and is naturally much heavier than the aforementioned two classes of hammers. Sledgehammers are designed to inflict a larger impact than the smaller hammers and are not really concerned with precision. These hammers are routinely intended for driving stakes and are very effective for demolition of quite a few materials. Pony markets a 10-pound sledgehammer mounted on a yard-long fiberglass handle which makes certain that the impact is concentrated on the object, rather than the person using this hammer. The steel head is heat treated for resilience, and the strike surfaces in addition to the sides are protected to prevent rust.
Hammers are very basic and especially practical tools. They can be used for shimming, flattening, punching, and sometimes for demolition. No decent tool box needs to be caught without at least a few of these handy tools. By the way, they are categorically not made for thumbs, wrists or other carbon-based targets, so ensure that other guy keeps his paws out of your sphere of influence.
