Turning Ordinary Rooms Into Extraordinary Rooms
Even the most palatial room is little more than a big empty box until it has been furnished and decorated. The primary reason we fill a room is so that the room can fulfill its intended purpose. The kitchen is not a kitchen until it contains work areas, storage cupboards, a sink, a stove and other necessary cooking appliances.
Beyond functionality, our rooms are reflections of our personal sense of style. This has been the case throughout history. Archaeologists have discovered cave drawings even in the most ancient of human dwellings. They can actually trace the evolution of man through the increasing complexity of our art and decoration. Simple outlines of hunters killing game evolved into elaborate colored frescoes and eventually into high art.
Today, we enjoy the opportunity to choose between a huge range of styles from many eras of history and cultural influences. As individuals and families, the styles we choose define us as individuals and societies. Style is in many ways more important than function to us. While one individual may choose to have a futon bed, another may prefer a sleigh bed.
Both a queen sized four poster bed and a queen sleigh bed are made for sleeping and each fulfills its function equally well. The one and only difference between the two is in their styles. These styles speak volumes about their owners.
Remember the importance of style when you are shopping for the furnishings in your home. What style of furniture really resonates with you? Do you prefer Victorian era furnishings or something more modern? Don't let the perceived cost get in the way of your decision. While you may not be able to afford an antique headboard, you can always get a faithful reproduction. There are so many to choose from, you can find something that's right for you no matter what your budget.
Yes, you do have to think about function and what will realistically fit into the space available to you. You may have to get a corner workstation when what you really want is a solid wood executive desk. You will be amazed, though, by how close an approximation in style you can get, even in a modestly priced corner work station from an online furniture dealer. The selection we have today is vast.
Don't let a modest budget hold you back. You may have to look hard to find what you want, but you can find it. Make your home your personal statement of taste and style. These are some of our most uniquely human characteristics. They enrich our lives immeasurably.
dark oak, Victorian desk/display cabinet?
Ok what about it? Do you want to refinish it? Are you asking how to care for it? Are you looking to see how much it is worth?
Mission furniture got a little crafty (jsonline)
Arts & Crafts, or Mission, furniture is described in most catalogs and
books as functional and simple, with straight legs and arms. Pieces have
little decoration, just visible mortise-and-tenon joints. Light or dark oak
was preferred. It was a short-lived style popular from 1900 to about 1915. The
designs were a revolt against the curved, highly decorated furniture of
Victorian times. They echoed the English William Morris and John Ruskin
idealized view of the single workman creating a piece of furniture in an
honest, personal manner.
