DIY Decorating Projects for Your Home

Many homeowners like to do their own decorating projects themselves. By doing your own projects, you ensure that your own style and personality will come through your homes dcor. Here are 5 great DIY decorating projects that you can do for your home.

1. Paint the Walls
Painting is by far the easiest and most effective way to entirely change the look of a room. Its important to remember that the color of the walls will always influence the dcor of the entire room. If you decide to paint the walls, be sure that you do it properly and prepare the walls as needed. You want a wall thats crack-free and smooth, so this may mean filling in cracks and then sanding them down. To complete the process, youll need to first put on a coat of primer and then possible a few coats of paint, depending on the color and the saturation of the wall.

2. Install Molding on the Walls
Molding instantly adds a new touch to your walls. Moldings great, because it will add some interest and appeal to an otherwise boring wall. You have many choices of what type of molding you want. You might go with crown molding, which is installed at the top of the wall, or go a different route with a chair rail, which is installed in the middle. Remember, you always want to paint or stain the moldingbefore you nail it to the wall. The nail holes can then be touched up with paint afterward.

3. Personalize the Lampshades
Are you having trouble finding the exact kind of lampshade you want? Or do you just want something that shows your style? Consider designing your own lampshade. An easy way to do this is to find a white or cream-colored lampshade. Then cut out designs or figures with dark paper such as black or red. Then tape the paper to the inside of the lampshade and you will have created a designer lampshade that reflects your own personal style. You can also personalize the lampshade by adding embellishments and ribbon as well. This is great way to add a touch of flairto a wood end table in your livingroom.

4. Make Your Own Artwork for the Walls
Even those who cant draw or paint well can still come up with their very own artwork for the walls or to place on a bookshelf. All you need to do is to get creative and use items you already have. Examples of this would be photographs, postcards, and book images to hang on the wall. Collages of items like those found in nature also make great pieces of art. You might also wrap a frame or blank canvas in a patterned fabric that fits the dcor of the room. If you choose two or three different patterns and different sized frames, you can hang them together in a cluster on the wall.

5. Make Your Own Window Treatments
For those who arent handy with a needle and thread or a sewing machine, there are many other techniques you can use to make your own curtains that dont involve sewing. To create instant interest around a window, simply take a long silk scarf and drape it over a window curtain. You can use other things to create instant window treatments, such as placemats and tablecloths. If you do happen to sew, you can pick out whatever fabric and pattern you like and make your own window treatments.

Just because a decorating project is DIY doesnt mean it has to be difficult. These are only 5 of the many different types of projects you can take on so you can decorate your home in your own personal style.
