Give Your Walls A Special Look
Make a statement with a stunning trompe l'oeil design. How would you like to have an amazing design adorning the walls of your favourite room that adds unique carácter ? Well, now you can thanks to trompe l'oeil wallpaper. The expression itself derives from the French and basically means to trick the eye. Also referred to as illusion painting, it is a technique where the artist creates lifelike, 3D-style paintings, such as a window, doorway, bookcase or stairs, on the wall, ceiling or other surface-even furniture. There are examples of trompe l'oeil dating back to ancient times and historically they were commissioned by the very rich and important . These days however it is no longer the exclusive preserve of the wealthy – indeed anyone can now achieve the same effect at home, albeit on a somewhat more modest scale. And you do not need to paint your own or hire an artist at great expense-you can simply choose from a selection of ingenious trompe l’oeil wallpaper for use in the home. Some designs come in panels, while others come in rolls just like common or garden wallpaper. Whether you want to restrict the effect to an alcove, or splash across a whole wall , you´ll find all sorts of striking designs that work well in both small and large spaces. No matter which you choose, the first thing you need to do is to prepare your walls.Fill holes and cracks with filler, then sand once set. If the walls are very uneven, you may want to use lining paper. With a trompe l'oeil wallpaper, it is vital the pattern lines up exactly and the seams join, well, seamlessly. This means buying more wallpaper than you would with a plain design because there will be more wastage. Also, use a seam roller when hanging it. Just remember that too much pattern can be a bit overwhelming in a room. So while it might be a bit of a cliche, it is actually true- sometimes less is more. Do not go mad with accessories – a few scented candles or maybe a reed diffuser by premium makes such as Yankee candles should be enough. One good tip is to link your trompe l'oeil to the room- for example, book shelves for a study, clothes for a bedroom or something food-related in the kitchen.
