Stripping/Refinishing Furniture?
I recently bought a fantastic antique chest for my room. It was really cheap, but its a really ugly blue/wood colour and I figured that I could strip off the paint and refurnish it, even though I've never done anything like this before. Can anyone tell me how to do this and what I need to buy to do this?

well whatever it is i would suggest using a solvent to remove what can be taken off first, if it is paint then M.E.K. should do the trick and if its stain then you will need laquer thinner, but be prepared these are some rather harsh solvents and you can not use regular latex type gloves as they will both eat right through them, you will need special chemical resistant type gloves or none at all if you prefer, (i never use any) but just make sure to wash your hands well after using them because after a while it will begin to burn your skin. Now all that assumes you wil be staining if not then you will simply want to wipe the whole thing down with deglosser to allow new paint to adhere to the surface. Now as for the finishing, lets start with sanding, first you will want to start with a medium type paper like 80 or 1 grit or so to remove any remaining finish (if your staining) or to give the paint whats called a "tooth" rough surface for the paint to stick to. now if you gonna stain you will want to do some finer sanding b4 staining so try 120 or even 180 to get a smoother surface. now i'll walk you through either application lets do the stain one first. After sanding with a finer paper you will want to get a good quality wiping stain or if the wood is not good enough for that tranparent of stain get some gel stain as well. Now if your covering bad wood you'll want to mix some gel with some wiping stain of the same color and brush it on achieving the look you want and not wiping it off, this will cover better. Otherwise simply brusch on the stain allow to soak for a couple minutes or longer to go darker then wipe off the excess. then you can use laquer if you wiped the stain or just use polyurethane if you left it heavy. either one coat of sanding sealer then real fine sand and then one or two coats of laquer or two coats of poly fine sanding in betweent coats. Now for the paint, you will want some good enamel underbody (benjamin moore makes the absolute best) Then two coats of good quality enamel again ben moore makes great ones and i prefer their satin impervo. For the finish you will want to add a little thinner and a fari amount of penetrol available at any paint store so as to get a much much soother finish, thin it with the penetrol till when your are brushing, the strokes dissappear completely. also you will watn to fine sand between every coat. So finally there we have it, following these steps will assure that you new furniture looks like it is in fact brand new. I strongly advise using good quality paints and or stains because with these products you really do get what you pay for and you would not want your new finish gettin easily scratched or flaking off.
