The florist's favourite day of the year
A mother's work is never done - except (hopefully) on Mother's Day.And some would say that Mother's Day should happen EVERY day, not just once a year - it is an opportunity to recognise mothers for all their efforts, love and support.
Let's look past any hype and commercialism, and see where the tradition has its origins.
Contrary to what some people believe, Mother's Day isn't a modern invention by some company as a sales strategy to promote their products. It's understood that it originated from the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations when festivals were held to worship the goddesses.Celebrations and spring festivals were held in the times of the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians to honour goddesses.
Several Christian denominations, including Anglicans, also have dedicated Mothering Sundays in the liturgical calendar. It is believed that Mothering Sunday originated in the United Kingdom around the 16th century when it was considered important for churchgoers to go back to their ‘mother’ church annually. It was also a time when many poor children were dispatched to rich families in other villages to work as servants, and these annual visits to the mother church were the scene of many joyful reunions between mother and child. The children often baked special 'mothering' cakes for their mothers as well as giving them flowers. These acts of giving are very much in vogue today, with flowers being one of the most popular ways of showing appreciation.
Catholics also had the fourth Sunday in the 40 day Lenten period as the day when the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, was revered. This was also a time when other family members assumed responsibility for some tasks that were perceived as traditionally in the female domain such as cooking and cleaning.
Mother's Day in the US is believed to have started with the story of dynamic author, Julia Ward Howe, who was an activist for the cause.Early in the 1900s, activist Anna Jarvis was instrumental in getting her home state, West Virginia, to declare the second Sunday in May (the anniversary of her mother's death) as an official Mothers' Day.At her mother's funeral, she gave funeral goers white carnations - which were her mother's favourite - and so they've become popular over that time.
Mother's Day is celebrated in different ways around the world and on different dates. And it's very common across the different cultures for mothers to be presented with gifts and flowers.
In the Western world, billions of dollars goes on gifts, flowers and special treats for Mother's Day.And it's not only the mothers who have big smiles over this time. Nearly eight percent of the annual revenue of the US jewellery industry is generated over the holiday, and it’s the most popular day for restaurant dining in the US.
It's a frantic time for many florists, with a WA florist, Airport Flowers, saying that it's one of the busiest days in the year for them but that they love doing beautiful arrangements for beautiful people.Florists aren't the only busy ones - restaurants, postal services, retailers and spas - are all frantic over the Mother's Day holiday - all keeping busy so that mothers can be spoilt rotten and given a chance to relax!
