Coming from little nobility, Diego Velasquez was given life in Seville in June 5, 1599 and he was the eldest of six children. At the age of eleven he began studying painting under the teaching of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen years old, the painter’s guild certified Velasquez as a master painter that permitted him to work as a professional painter. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with his master’s daughter and married her; he settled down in a house he bought through the money he made in his paintings and he also bought another house which he rented out to tenants.
Diego Velasquez produced plenty of exceptional paintings that made him famous and an example of the country’s most influential personalities. One of most popular paintings that came alive under his brush was The Surrender of Breda which he created after meeting the great Marques de Spinola; Spinola was in awe after seeing the details of The Surrender of Breda, wondering at Diego Velasquez’s talent to translate such emotions and realism through his brush strokes. However, Diego Velasquez would create another masterpiece that is regarded the greatest piece he has made which is Las Meninas or TheMaids in Honour; it is the most viewed painting in the world and even most people that are not familiar with Spanish painters knew his name because of Las Meninas.
