China To Be Major Wine Consumer Within Next Decade
Recent figures released by the UK based International Wine and Spirit Research body have revealed shifts in Wine consumption around the world. But the IWSR also predicts a very different wine industry emerging over the next half decade.
Cabernet Sauvignon Wine was the drink of choice in the French halls of Wine pressing power as it was revealed that France was once again the king of wine production in 2010. In 2009, French production was outstripped by a particularly high yielding year of Italian wine production. The total output of the French vineyards was said to be 419 million cases in 2010 alone. Italy is back down to second, just above Spain who have been the third place provider for some time. The picture for the foreseeable future is likely to be unchanged in this aspect: all three nations will have roughly the same demand by 2014. However, in the long term they are likely to be challenged by pushes from Argentina, Chile, China and South Africa
In 2010, 36 billion bottles of wine were produced globally. You won't necessarily find the big producers among the biggest consumers of wine. With a fledgling industry that hasn't quite broken the status quo, the United Kingdom still contents itself as with being the world's largest wine importer. However, generally speaking, the UK consumer prefers cheap whites over expensive Reds like Tempranillo wine. The UK is however, also the second largest consumer of 'higher priced wines', second only to France.
The importance of Europe as a consumer market is set to dwindle in the next decade, however. Russia is one such growing market: they will consume 5.5 million more cases per year when the calendar flips over to 2014. But the real nations for growth are the US and China. 27 million more cases will be needed in US to meet demand by 2014; China will need 20 million. The demand is becoming for premium White and Red Wine brands in the wider Asian market. The US is likely to become the largest wine consumer in the world soon enough: but before long, China is likely to take this distinction.

6 children among 8 dead in West Virginia house fire (orlandosentinel)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A fire tore through a two-story home that had no
functioning smoke detectors Saturday in West Virginia's capital city, killing
eight family members, including six children, the city's mayor said.Charleston
Mayor Danny Jones said he believed it was the city's deadliest fire in at
least six decades. Jones said only one smoke detector was found in a cabinet,
and it was not working.In the yard of the home that sits on a corner in a
neighborhood tightly packed with small houses, a children's picnic table,
chairs and umbrella were overturned. The outside of the front of the home was
blackened by the flames and smoke.Jones said he was devastated by the news
when he got the call sometime after the fire was reported around 3:30 a.m."I
was with my children and I just grabbed them and hugged them, because I have a
5-year-old and a 4-year-old," he said. "I walked up there and caught a glimpse
of some fatalities and it's something that's hard to grasp. The fact that
