How A Goth Might Decorate Her Home
'It takes one to know one, ' they say. That's got to be true of goths. If you don't live the lifestyle or have one living in your home, you can only guess at how they decorate their homes. Gothic fashion gives you a decent idea, though.
Aside from their bulky silver jewelry and a touch of vermilion here and there, gothics dress in black from head to foot. Therefore, ebony is probably the color they use the most in their homes. The goth that could afford one would have a large black dining room set and they would plant a very large and elaborate silver candelabra in the middle of the circular table.
Their choice of china would definitely be black. They would have ornate silverware, polished to perfection. It may even be an antique silverware set, circa the era when Count Dracula lived in his castle. His dining room would be the inspiration for theirs.
The living room would follow the same monochromatic color scheme. Our hypothetical wealthy goth, perhaps a lead singer in a successful gothic band, would have the finest, most luxurious furniture, with black leather couches and chairs. The black glass coffee table would be custom made out of metal, with ornate detailing. The TV set would be large and minimalistic, since there's no such thing as a gothic style television set.
What would be the main color in the bedroom? It would be black, of course. If they didn't have a black four poster, they would have a black full size loft bed.
Does a loft bed seem like an odd choice? If so, think about this: bats hang from ceilings. People can't hang from the ceiling, but they can sleep on an elevated bed near the ceiling. While it's not quite as good as changing into a bat, it's a step in the right direction.
As subcultures go, the gothic subculture is one of the more interesting. Most people wrote it off as a fad, but it persists. You can find them in any major city in the United States, Europe and Japan. They have their own styles and they keep to themselves. Many people are intimidated by them, but really, outsiders don't know the first thing about them.
Are they nihilistic or satanic? Who knows? The truth is, many of them dress up in their gothic clothes on the weekends and have straight jobs during the week. You could have a sales meeting with one on friday afternoon and not recognize them on the streets that night.
They may not live in homes that are decorated like the imaginary one described above. As a matter of fact, it's a good bet that most of them do not. Most goths are still living with their parents, who probably are not all that into black. The fact that they are interesting, though, makes it fun to have goth neighbors, even if you never get the opportunity to learn what really makes them tick.

Joe Rosson: Refinishing won't hurt value of utilitarian chairs (Knoxville News Sentinel)
Dear Mr. Rosson:I have four chairs that came from a friend and they have been
in the family since they were new. Two of them need to be repaired because
they have begun to wobble a bit. So refinish or not to refinish, that is the
question.S.G.Dear S.G.:These chairs are early 20th century (circa 1910) dining
room chairs with punched fiber board seats, cabriole legs, and a vasiform back
splat. They look like they may be oak with a mahogany finish, and they were
manufactured rather than hand made.
Louis XV style chairs - circa 1940
