How To Navigate Your Way Through American Furniture Styles
A number of people promptly think of European styles when they think about antique furniture. The style of furniture you’ll come across in U.S. antique stores, on the other hand, is traditional American furniture. Similar to its European counterparts, American furniture is split up into a variety of varieties and time periods. The intention of this article is to basically identify the diverse forms of vintage American furniture, in hopes that when you go hunting, you’ll manage to engage in an intelligent conversation with the store owner.
Both Early American and Pennsylvania Dutch pieces of furniture were extremely practical, plain styles of furniture. Whilst Early American furniture is commonly classified as existing prior to 1700 and Pennsylvania Dutch past 1720, there exists a sizeable overlap between the two types, and very few authentic pieces of either in existence. Early American furniture frequently made use of components from France and The Netherlands. Pennsylvania Dutch furniture has been considered the initial New England furniture design and had intense and evident German flavor. Pennsylvania Dutch fashion and can be indicated by colorful folk painting as opposed to a ordinary or painted finish.
Colonial furniture frequently mixed the designs of the popular European styles of the time, including Chippendale and Jacobean. Sorting out Colonial furnishings from their European relatives may be complicated for the normal consumer, though, thanks to the specific features that define these styles, such as cabriole legs or oriental lacquer work. The Chippendale style specifically influenced the design of furniture loveseats for quite a few years.
Federal style furniture first appeared during the colonial years, yet is quite a bit different in appearance from colonial furniture. This furniture includes a dainty appearance, tapered legs, and basic accent pieces instead of the more baroque adornments that defined colonial furniture. A few sub-classifications of Federal style include Sheraton and Duncan Phyfe. American Empire fashion is a departure from the Federal style with more European style elements, but was created during the Federal period.
Shaker Furniture might cause the typical collector a lot of berwilderment, simply because even though “authentic” Shaker furniture was only made earlier than the Civil War, Shaker communities have continuously produced this furniture for over a century with minimal variance in fashion or construction methods. Shaker furniture is dark furniture typically indicated by simple patterns, straight lines and a total absence of decorative elements.
The polar opposite of Shaker Furniture is Victorian furniture. Named after the reigning monarch of England, Victorian furniture is recognized by stout dimensions, dark finishes, and elaborate carving. Interestingly, Victorian furniture was among the first furniture produced in factories as opposed to manually. Around the beginning of the 20th century, Victorian Furniture started to develop into Art Nouveau styles, just as intricate but more naturalistic and significantly more delicate looking.
Arts and Crafts furniture designated the departure from the Victorian era by banishing ornamentation completely, relying instead on powerful lines and sizeable hardware. This style is occasionally known as Mission furniture, especially when a piece includes several vertical slats on a chair back or side panel.
hey does anybody know a good way to sell an antique duncan phyfe dinette set other than e-bay? thanks?
I've never sold anything like this before and it is all original. Table with 6 chairs, buffet and china cabinet. It could be refinished, but I've heard it messes up the value and it looks good now.
